Janice Morrison is running to be Nelson’s mayor in the Oct. 15 municipal election.
The three-term councillor will challenge incumbent mayor John Dooley, as well as new candidates John Buffery, Tom Prior and Mike Zeabin.
Morrison said she is running because thinks Nelson needs a change in leadership.
“I think that people are looking for a different style. I believe that I can offer a more open and transparent form of government … I’ve had a number of people that have reached out to me, saying that they would like to see some change.”
She said she would like to see fewer in-camera (closed to the public) meetings, and better communication with the public. She wants to keep post-pandemic taxes and costs down and at the same time manage the fast rate of growth in Nelson.
“I believe I’m the person to lead that because I have a diverse amount of leadership experience that comes from my involvement, not only as a three-term city councillor, but my experience on other boards and committees here locally and within the province.”
Morrison was first elected to council in 1999, then did not run for the next three elections, and was elected again in 2014 and 2018. She has recently retired from her job as a physical therapist with Interior Health.
