Cooling centres open in Nelson

Facilities are geared toward people with no air conditioning

The City of Nelson and two service organizations have opened three cooling centres for the public in response to the extreme heat expected over the next few days.

Those operated by the Salvation Army and Nelson CARES are geared toward the regular clients of those organizations and to people at risk.

All of three centres offer an air conditioned space with water, washrooms, and a place to sit down, says Nelson’s fire chief Jeff Hiebert.

Here are the locations and times for all three centres:

Nelson Curling Club, 302 Cedar St.

Accessible from Cedar Street or from the community complex parking lot.

Wednesday July 27 until Saturday July 30, noon to 8:00 p.m.

Salvation Army, 601 Vernon St.

Wednesday July 27, 3:00 to 8:00 p.m.

Thursday July 28 and Friday, July 29, 1:00 to 8:00 p.m.

Saturday, July 30, 2:00 to 8:00 p.m.

Days may be extended.

Nelson CARES (The Hub) 521 Vernon St.

Wednesday to Friday, July 27 to 29, 12:30 to 8:00 p.m.

Days may be extended.
