Dog owners can now take their dogs downtown in Nelson provided the dogs are leashed, cleaned up after, and not tied up. Nelson’s new dog bylaw officially came into effect on Monday.

The city has instituted new fines for a number of dog infractions, but city manager Kevin Cormack says bylaw officers will be taking an informational and educational approach, rather than a punitive one. No one will be ticketed for a first offence.

However, Cormack says people with outstanding fines under the old by-law are still expected to pay them.

The city recently repealed its 20-year-old ban on downtown dogs.
