Elections staff start to assemble

A handful of staff are now working the Elections Canada office on the fifth floor of Nelson City Hall.

Returning officer Rob Switzer says that number will grow closer to 20, depending on the workload.

Overall, 500 to 600 people will be required across the riding to handle the election, including those on voting day.

Switzer says they usually keep the same polling stations between elections, unless they become unavailable.

“We make every effort to have voting places that are completely accessible,” he says. “Sometimes we receive feedback from the public or the parties that a given office was less than ideal and we’ll make a change based on that.”

He says in the last election, advanced voting in Nelson was conducted on the upper level of the community complex, but “that didn’t work out very well.”

Although he’s not sure where advance ballots will be cast this time, “I can tell you it’s not going to be there again.”

Switzer says everyone on the voters list will receive an information card in the mail in the coming weeks. If you don’t get one, contact their office. If it turns out you’re not on the voters list, you’ll be asked to provide identification to register.

“The rule of the thumb is your driver’s license usually has you covered as long as your up-to-date address is on it,” he says.

“For the purposes of voting, we need a street address so we can locate you.”

The election office is open 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. weekdays, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, and noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday. It can be reached at 1-866-546-7619.
