A wildfire burning west of Kaslo is no longer threatening 14 properties, according to the Regional District of Central Kootenay.
In a statement released Monday, the RDCK said it had removed an evacuation alert for the residents along Kaslo Creek South Fork Road. The properties are located near the Briggs Creek wildfire, which was first discovered Aug. 1 and has since grown to an estimated 2,160 hectares.
“This has been a stressful month for residents along Kaslo Creek South Fork Road and we appreciate their patience and understanding through this process,” said Stephane Coutu, RDCK Emergency Operations Centre deputy director.
“The BC Wildfire Service has done an outstanding job to keep our communities safe and while this alert has been removed, it is imperative for residents to maintain awareness by monitoring the BC Wildfire Dashboard and make informed decisions.”
There were 73 active fires in the Southeast Fire Centre region, which includes Kaslo and the Nelson area, as of Monday afternoon according to the B.C. Wildfire Service.
Those include the 100-hectare fire at Gamble Creek east of Salmo that’s listed as out of control and an 18-hectare fire at Mulvey Creek near Slocan that’s being held.
Three local fires are also considered under control. They include a 2.8-hectare fire south of Kokanee Glacier Provincial Park, a 9.5-hectare fire at Slocan Bluffs and a seven-hectare fire east of Ymir.
