Federal candidates square off on Tuesday

Tuesday’s federal all-candidates forum in Nelson will feature some one-on-one debate.

Chamber of Commerce manager Tom Thomson, who will moderate, says following opening remarks, questions will alternate between the public and a media panel including Nelson Star editor Bob Hall, 103.5 The Bridge news director Glenn Hicks, and possibly others.

The media time will include a series of quick-fire rounds pitting pairs of candidates against each other on specially tailored questions.

“It’s not just drawing them out of  a hat and finding out about their policies,” Thomson explains.

Audience questions will be allowed, but have to be to the point. “We’re going to make it clear they have to be asked within 30 seconds and must end in a question mark,” he says.

All four candidates have confirmed their attendance. The forum goes from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the Hume Room of the Hume Hotel.

Another forum dealing specifically with social issues is planned for Friday, April 29 at 6:30 p.m. in the Anglican Hall at Ward and Carbonate.
