Early in the afternoon on Sept. 2, Nelson Fire and Rescue Services extinguished a grass fire in the lower downtown area.
The fire, six metres by six metres in size, started at the bottom of Stanley Street below City Hall.
“A grass fire had originated in an unapproved camp site and was aggressively burning dry grasses between Stanley Street and the CP Rail tracks,” a fire department news release stated.
“The initial flame front was knocked down by bystanders and Nelson Police Department officers with handheld fire extinguishers.”
There were no injuries as a result of the fire.
In the news release, the department reminded residents that there is a year-round ban on camp and cooking fires within the city.
“In this late summer season, grasses are very dry and susceptible to ignition sources.”
