Nelson Fire and Rescue Services extinguished a fire in a basement suite on the 600 block Third Street at 9:30 p.m. on July 15, according to a news release.
“Upon arrival of the first crew, there was visible smoke and flames coming from a basement bedroom window,” the news release states.
“The first arriving crew’s primary objective was to knock the flames down and prevent the fire from spreading to the rest of the house. The fire was extinguished shortly after [9:50 p.m.].”
The rest of the basement suffered heavy smoke and heat damage, and damage is estimated at $100,000. No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
“Nelson Fire and Rescue Services would like to take this opportunity to remind everyone to ensure you have an evacuation plan for your family and remember to test your smoke alarm monthly.”
