Globe writer looks into Jumbo

The Globe and Mail devoted parts of five pages in its Saturday travel section to an in-depth story on the Jumbo Glacier Resort controversy.

Kimberley writer Bruce Kirkby interviewed the resort’s proponent, East Kootenay MLA Bill Bennett, bear biologist Michael Proctor, and members of the Ktunaxa First Nation, among others. His conclusion?

“While the proponent’s vision of transplanting a European-style resort to the heart of the Canadian wilderness has a certain appeal, it offers an even greater opportunity: to learn from the mistakes of the Continent. The Alps, with a history of heavy mountain development, have already squeezed the essential wilderness from their peaks and valleys.”

The story is on the Globe website and as of Tuesday morning had generated 166 comments.
