At about 7:30 p.m. on Monday, Nelson Fire and Rescue Services put out a grass fire on the CPR lands near Kal Tire between the rail tracks and the lake.

According to a news release, the fire was about 400 feet from the nearest road access and approximately 1,400 square feet in size. The initial crew was able to extend hose lines and put water on the fire to keep it from spreading. When additional members arrived, the fire was extinguished.

The news release states that the fire appears to have been the result of carelessly discarded smoking materials, although the cause of the fire is still under investigation by Nelson Police Department members who attended the scene.
