Husky station robbed

Someone stole computer equipment from the Husky station Friday morning. Police have recovered a suspect vehicle.

An eagle-eyed radio listener helped the Nelson Police track down a vehicle less than 10 hours after it was likely used in a robbery.

Deputy chief Henry Paivarinta says the Husky station on Nelson Avenue was broken into around 5:30 a.m., when someone shattered the gas station's glass door and made off with some computer equipment. The getaway vehicle appears to have been a Dodge Ram pickup normally parked across the street and displaying a for sale sign.

Paivarinta says they broadcast a description of the truck on the radio this morning "and someone who was listening to the local radio heard the broadcast and saw the vehicle parked in a place where it generally wouldn't be and recognized the plate."

A forensic examination of the truck is underway, but Paivarinta says it's not clear how much information police will be able to extract.

"It just depends on what they can lift from inside the vehicle," he says. "It's certainly dependent upon the condition and how clean the vehicle was inside. And this time of year they could have been wearing gloves."

The investigation into the break in is ongoing. Paivarinta says the value of the equipment stolen is still being determined, and it's not known if the gas station had surveillance cameras.
