The BC Coroners Service will hold a public inquest into the death of Ymir’s Sheilah Sweatman.
Sweatman was performing a recovery operation with the swift water rescue division of Nelson Search and Rescue when she drowned in the Goat River near Creston on June 29.
Presiding coroner Mark Coleman and a jury will hear evidence from subpoenaed witnesses to determine the facts surrounding this death. The jury will have the opportunity to make recommendations aimed at preventing deaths under similar circumstances in the future.
An inquest is a formal court process that allows for public presentation of all evidence relating to a death. The BC Coroners Service is an independent fact-finding agency that may not make any finding of legal responsibility.
The date and venue for the inquest has not been determined and will be announced once confirmed.
