Kerr fence not a sign of any progress

A fence has gone up around the burnt out Kerr Apartments, but fire chief Simon Grypma says that’s not a sign the demolition needed for a fire investigation is about to begin.

A fence around the burned-out Kerr building is to prevent people from being hit by falling debris — not because demolition work is about to begin.

A fence has gone up around the burnt out Kerr Apartments, but fire chief Simon Grypma says that’s not a sign the demolition needed for a fire investigation is about to begin.

Instead, Grypma says the fence was put up to keep pedestrians out of the way of falling debris.

The Kerr burned in January in what Grypma called a “suspicious” fire, but an investigation into what happened has been on hold because the blaze’s  origin point is buried under several caved-in floors. Demolition crews first have to dig out the spot, located in the back corner of the building’s basement.

Grypma says he expects it will be at least two or three more weeks before that happens.
