Nelson City Council, at its Dec. 7 meeting, voted to adopt a new policy on downtown restaurant patios for the coming year.

Fees for patios will be waived until the end of 2022.

Patios may open as of May 1 and run until Sept. 30. There will be no winter patios this year.

For patio extensions, in which a restaurant extends its patio into the frontage of a neighbouring business with the permission of that business, fees will be charged at a rate of the greater of $300 or $48.50 per square metre, and $300 per parking stall taken up.

Patio extensions may not open until July 1 and may stay open until Sept. 30.
