A small wildfire was located and extinguished my Nelson Fire and the Southeast Fire Centre on Friday.

According to a press release from the Nelson Fire Hall, "the fire was caused by a carelessly abandoned camp fire near what appears to be a squatters camp."

The fire was first spotted by an individual who had seen the fire from his boat while near Grohman Narrows.

Two fire rescue boats including one with a fire pump on board were dispatched.

"Chief Grypma accessed the fire from the CP rail tracks below Grohman park and reported the fire to be approximately 250 square feet and spreading slowly as there was no wind," read the release.

Due to the quick response of all the responders the wildfire was extinguished quickly.

"This area has a high fuel load and whenever a fire is ignited at the base of a steep slope the fire will travel very quickly."

Due to the warmer, drier conditions over the past few weeks Nelson Fire Rescue and the Southeast Fire Centre are reminding people to be extremely cautious when having a campfire and that all other fires are banned.

"During this time of the year, any fire no matter how small has the ability to turn into a wildfire with tragic results."
