The Federal Gas Tax Fund will provide the full $6 million needed for the City of Nelson to complete one part of its Master Water Plan.
Currently water from the city’s main source at Five Mile Creek receives ultra violet (UV) treatment at the main reservoir at Mountain Station. Water from secondary sources at Selous and Anderson Creeks, used during low-water periods in the summer, do not receive UV treatment at their own secondary reservoirs.
The new project would see water from Anderson and Selous Creeks piped to the Mountain Station reservoir to receive UV treatment and to centralize the reservoir system.
UV is a disinfection method that uses short-wavelength ultraviolet light to kill or deactivate microorganisms.
In Nelson’s Water Master Plan, updated last year, this project was identified as the necessary first step in improving and diversifying the city’s water supply.
Other future projects recommended in the plan include replacing the pipeline from the Five Mile Creek intake to the reservoir and finding a way to use Kootenay Lake as a water source.
“Councils past and present continue to make infrastructure renewal a high priority,” Mayor Deb Kozak said in a news release. “Our investment in sound planning played a major role in obtaining this substantial federal grant, which will keep us on track with upgrades to our water infrastructure.”
