The City of Nelson and Nelson Hydro will participate in Earth Hour this weekend by shutting off almost all lights at city-owned facilities.
That includes decorative lights on Baker Street, walkway lights, park lighting, power plant and substation lights.
They’re also encouraging residents to switch off or unplug non-essential lights, appliances, and electronics on Saturday from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m.
FortisBC is again sponsoring the Earth Hour community challenge in which homeowners and businesses can pledge their participation on the company’s website at fortisbc.com/earthhour.
It increases the community’s chance to win a $5,000 energy savings upgrade for a non-profit organization, which in this case is the Nelson Cares Society.
Last year Nelson Hydro says energy consumption was reduced three per cent during Earth Hour.
