A man convicted of manslaughter in the death of an off-duty police officer will be sentenced in Nelson court on Dec. 18 and 19.
Alex Willness was found guilty on June 20 following a trial.
On June 16, 2020, Abbotsford police officer Allan Young was one of a number of diners on a downtown patio. Willness and a group of friends were walking down the street yelling and swearing, and Young confronted him.
Willness hit Young on the head with a skateboard, and Young died several hours later.
The maximum sentence for manslaughter in Canada is life imprisonment, and there is no minimum sentence. In a review of sentencing in manslaughter cases, the federal government found that a length of sentence for male offenders was typically between six and 12 years, depending on the circumstances.
