Where should the city locate its farmers markets and during what hours?

This may sound like a familiar question after several years of market debate and experimentation, but the City of Nelson is still looking for an answer, so it has set up an online consultation process to ask members of the public for their take on it.

A ThoughtExchange process will gather those opinions. The process asks for short, anonymous opinions on specific questions and asks respondents to rank the ideas of others. This will result in a summary of responses that is published in real time on the site. Respondents can return each day to see new ideas and rank them.

“Obviously, the Saturday market is going very well, but we’re just not there yet for the Wednesday market,” said the city’s chief financial officer Colin McClure who cited low Wednesday numbers of both vendors and customers at the Cottonwood Park location.

He acknowledged that some downtown businesses like having the markets downtown while others do not. He said a downtown market is still a possibility, adding that it is the city’s goal to continue making improvements to Cottonwood Park to make it the favoured spot for vendors and customers.

The deadline for responses is Feb. 10.
