Nelson Police Department respond to calls over the holidays involving a civilian's attempt to detain an intoxicated man after vehicle crash

Civilian attempts to detain intoxicated man after vehicle crash

On January 1 at 3:10 a.m the Nelson Police Department (NDP) received multiple 911 calls about a fight in the 100 block Anderson Street.

Members attended to see two males fighting by a crashed vehicle. One of the males fled on foot as soon as he saw police. He was captured a short distance away and found to be highly intoxicated. It was found that the other male fighting was a concerned citizen who noted the other male driving dangerously and ultimately crashing his vehicle. He was attempting to detain the driver for police when he started fighting in order to escape.  Fortunately he was not hurt in the scuffle.

A 19-year-old local male was held in NPD cells overnight until sober. He will appear in Nelson Law Courts to answer to charges of impaired driving, hit and run, resist arrest and escaping lawful custody.

Accidental drug overdose

On January 2 at 10 p.m. the Nelson Police was asked to assist an RCMP member with a male they found wandering on the roadway in the 100 block Vernon Street without shoes on or any ID. He appeared to be in a condition known as excited delirium, which can be fatal if not treated quickly.  Nelson Police members, Emergency Health Services (ambulance), and Nelson Fire raced to the scene along with an emergency doctor.

The 33-year-old Kelowna male was transported to Kootenay Lake Hospital and treated for what was found to be an accidental drug overdose, which Sgt. Bayes said initial reviews indicate was possibly cocaine. His vehicle was found nearby and a significant quantity of street drugs was found inside. The investigation is ongoing.

Stolen Boxing Day items found

If your vehicle was broken into on or around Boxing Day the Nelson Police might have your property.

A male was taken into custody for breaching conditions of his probation on December 26.  He had items in his pockets such as vehicle documents, numerous charger chords, cigarettes, children’s clothing and various small items typically left in vehicles. This would likely have occurred in the area around the recreation centre and possible into Fairview.

If you think any of this property is yours, please contact Const. Hannah at the Nelson Police Department at 250-354-3919 to identify and claim items.
