Nelson is limiting how much outdoor water can be used while Salmo is asking residents voluntarily do the same with rising heat expected to worsen the ongoing West Kootenay drought.
The City of Nelson moved to Stage 2 water restrictions on Aug. 8. That limits the watering of lawns with a sprinkler or irrigation system to just once per week.
Even-numbered addresses are allowed to water this way on Wednesdays, while odd-numbered addresses may water Thursdays.
Watering can be done between 4 a.m. and 9 a.m., as well as from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Hand watering using a shut-off nozzle can also be done any day of the week, albeit during restricted hours.
Washing of sidewalks, driveways and house exteriors isn’t permitted.
Salmo residents meanwhile are being asked to cut down their water use however they can.
The Village of Salmo said in a statement Aug. 11 that residents can help conserve water indoors with small changes like taking shorter showers, running full loads of laundry or in the dishwasher, or turning the tap off when not in use while brushing or shaving.
Outdoor suggestions include water sparingly, checking for leaks and using a broom instead of a hose to clean driveways.
Recommendations for businesses include reviewing water use, checking for leaks and recycling water when appropriate.
A Village spokesperson said the request isn’t the result of any water supply concerns for Salmo.
The Kootenays are currently rated drought level four out of five by the provincial government.
