This handsome set of stone steps on Cedar Avenue in Trail no longer goes anywhere.

Ninth in a series of West Kootenay-related lists

BRILLIANT

Below Verigin’s Tomb, part of the foundations of a house that belonged to Peter (Lordly) Verigin but burned down. The steps are visible from the highway.

NELSON

In the 1300 block of Falls Street, close to its intersection with Robson Street. The blocked-off steps descend into someone’s backyard, and a path continues down to the highway interchange.

These stairs lead up to a house in the 200 block of High Street, but you wouldn’t want to climb them.

SOUTH SLOCAN

Near Creel Lodge, these used to lead to a house.

TRAIL

Several homes were demolished on Cedar Avenue in the late 1980s to make room for a parking lot for Selkirk College. However, some foundations were left behind, along with a chimney and two sets of stairs, including this one.

On the hospital hill. These go up towards J.L. Crowe Secondary, but terminate at a little-used path.

Just off Riverside Avenue, near the old bridge.

NAKUSP

Along the waterfront promenade. The bottom steps are underwater part of the year. They would have been used to get up to town from the old shipyard.

CASTLEGAR

Along Columbia Avenue, between Kootenay Market and a set of condominiums. The stairs are blocked off from the sidewalk by a set of bars. Presumably there was once a house on the lot. Now it’s completely overgrown.
