Ophthalmology services are now available at Kootenay Lake Hospital after a delayed start that required the cancellation and re-booking of some appointments this summer.
Clinic technicians are available two days each week to support ophthalmologist Dr. Faye Pesenti who will travel to Nelson one day each week from Trail, according to a spokesperson at Interior Health.
Ophthalmology is the science of eye disorders and treatment including surgery.
Technicians perform standard testing related to glaucoma, retinal diseases, neurological screening, dermatochalasis, and biopsies. Those tests are required before a patient sees the ophthalmologist.
Dr. Pesenti’s schedule in Nelson follows the retirement of Dr. Neville Maytom, who practiced ophthalmology full time for 30 years in Nelson at Kootenay Lake Hospital before retiring in February.
Interior Health originally said Maytom would not be replaced, meaning patients would have had to travel to Trail.
