Police are warning Kootenay residents to use caution following four critical overdose cases in the Nelson area in the past three months.

The Nelson Police Department continues to get “numerous” complaints about a phone scam where someone calls claiming to be from Canada Revenue Agency or a collection agency.

The caller asks for personal information (including social insurance numbers) from the public.

Police say you shouldn’t believe them or provide them with any information.

Anyone who unwittingly does provide personal info or receive deceptive telemarketing should contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501.

Further information on this scam can be found on the Canada Revenue Agency website  at cra-arc.gc.ca/ntcs/bwr-eng.html.
