UPDATE: Firefighter injured battling Sunday morning blaze that destroyed Castlegar home

The fire occurred in the 3200 block of 5th Avenue in Castlegar

Fire destroyed a home in the 3200 block of 5th Avenue in Castlegar Sunday morning, May 2.

Castlegar Fire Department received the call at 10:13 a.m. and by that time flames were already visible through the roof.

Two occupants of the home escaped without injury, but a cat darted away and is still lost.

Twenty firefighters successfully fought to keep the fire from spreading to neighbouring houses, but the heat caused damage to a fence and shed at one neighbouring property.

One firefighter was hurt while fighting the fire with a lower-body injury. They were transported from the scene to hospital by ambulance, but have since been released to recover at home.

In addition to all of CFD’s apparatus, RCMP, B.C. Ambulance Service, Fortis and Dynamic Landscaping also attended the scene.

Chief Sam Lattanzio said he was appreciative of the support received from other agencies for several reasons.

“I was thankful for BCAS remaining at the scene,” said Lattanzio. “They were there in our moment of need.”

He also said RCMP were helpful with crowd control issues and would be following up on a few incidents from the scene — one car drove over a fully-charged fire house and another knocked down safety cones.

The house was insured.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

There have been a number of fires in recent months in Castlegar:
