A bear warning has again been issued for the Rosemont area after a large bear was spotted outside of a home in the 600-block of West Gore Street on Wednesday.

The Nelson Police Department said an adult black or brown bear was “located in front of a private residence, possibly trying to access a covered porch area” at about 6 p.m.

“The bear was scared off by the homeowner” and was last seen heading towards a nearby wooded area, said a police press release. NPD attended the scene but were unable to locate the bear.

Nelson residents are reminded to be vigilant of their surroundings and contact police and BC Conservation of any similar sightings. Residents across the City are further reminded that we are now entering the bear season where adherence to the City of Nelson’s Waste Management and Wildlife Attractant Bylaw will greatly reduce these types of encounters with bears and other wildlife. This includes properly securing household garbage and keeping pets inside.

The BC Conservation Service has been notified.

In early March, a black bear was spotted in lower Rosemount near Lakeview Crescent on at least two occasions.

It isn’t known if the bear spotted Wednesday is the same bear.
