Students of all ages will return to class next week and the Nelson Police Department is reminding drivers to slow down.

“We will be enhancing enforcement during the first week,” says Cst. Jarrett Slomba.

The speed limit in school zones is 30 km/h between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.

Police have traditionally witnessed higher speeds through the local zones during the first couple weeks of school as those without children often forget that class is back in. The biggest trouble spots are Stanley Street in front of Central School and around South Nelson Elementary and St. Joseph’s Elementary.

“Some people just go flying through these school zones,” says Cst. Dave Laing. “The parents and students are always pretty happy to see us set up there and keeping an eye on the situation.”

School resumes on Tuesday for most students.
