Police successfully talk young woman off Nelson Bridge

Just after 7 p.m. Sunday, the Nelson Police Department received a report of a female attempting to climb to the top of the Nelson Bridge.

Nelson Police were called to the Orange Bridge on Sunday night.

Just after 7 p.m. Sunday, the Nelson Police Department received a report of a female attempting to climb to the top of the Nelson Bridge.

“Members arrived on scene to find a known 23-year-old female and Nelson resident seated precariously atop the bridge structure in an agitated emotional state,” a police release stated. “The female expressed a desire to jump.”

Officers immediately closed down access to the bridge and engaged in negotiations with the young woman.

The Nelson Fire Department, BC Ambulance Service, and Nelson Search and Rescue were also called to the scene to assist.

After approximately one hour of effective negotiations by NPD members and with the assistance of the fire department members and ladder truck, the female was safely removed from the bridge and brought to safety.

She was transported to Kootenay Lake Hospital where she was underwent a mental health assessment conducted by a physician.
