Power restored on Kootenay Lake

A windstorm late Saturday and early Sunday knocked out power to Nelson Hydro customers on the North Shore.

Line manager Doug Pickard says they had “significant trouble” beginning around midnight and continuing until 6 a.m.

Hardest hit was the Coffee Creek feeder that serves the Kootenay Lake outlet, including Queens Bay, Balfour, Harrop, and Procter.

Pickard says power was out for three hours, affecting 1,280 customers. Another 50 customers were affected for about five hours in the Ridgewood Road area after a large tree came down on a line — and damaged a couple of cars.

“Due to the windstorm, the Queens Bay area also had quite a few trees down,” he says.

Another outage at Holmberg Road affected four customers, but wasn’t reported until later in the morning, and took linemen from about 9 to 11 a.m. to fix.

“It was pretty dicey going with that wind for some of the tree removal,” Pickard says.

He adds there were no outages within city limits, although the wind gusts were certainly felt, and crews were still dealing with debris on Monday.
