Salmo child abduction a hoax, police say

RCMP say the alleged abduction of a Salmo teen this morning didn’t happen.

A 13-year-old boy came to police saying that a man forced him to get into a van before he escaped.

Although they took the incident seriously and warned local schools, within a few hours through “extensive interviewing,” they established the incident never took place.

There’s no word if the youth will face charges.

Asked earlier in the day about the possibility of a hoax, Staff Sgt. Dan Seibel said they had to treat the report as real and felt it was better to be safe than sorry.

“We have to go on our instincts. If we later find out it’s not [legitimate], we deal with that accordingly. But if we don’t take the action and steps we have and another incident occurs, I think we would have been remiss in our efforts.”
