Single vehicle accident sets fire to forest near Nelson

One person injured in accident on Svoboda Road

On Sunday evening a vehicle left Svoboda Road, rolled down a bank, caught fire, and set the surrounding forest ablaze, according to a news release from Nelson Fire and Rescue.

The driver was taken to Kootenay Lake Hospital with undetermined injuries. The single passenger and a dog were uninjured.

Putting out the fire was a challenge.

“Due to the steep terrain, crews had to use rescue ropes to get into a position to be able to fully extinguish the fire without being directly below the vehicle,” the statement said.

The Nelson Police Department is investigating the cause of the accident.
