Where there’s smoke, there’s not necessarily any fires.
BC Wildfire Service said Wednesday that smoke from fires in northeastern B.C. was blowing toward southern communities.
The smoke arrived midday Thursday and caused Nelson, Trail and Castlegar’s air quality to become unhealthy for sensitive groups, according to IQair.com.
Air quality was still considered moderate in Grand Forks as of early Thursday afternoon. The smoke also had not made its way east of Nelson, with Creston and Cranbrook each listed as good air quality.
The Southeast Fire Centre, which includes the Kootenays and parts of the Columbia, has few active fires. The largest in the region is the Soards Creek blaze, which is north of Revelstoke and was 1,138 hectares as of Thursday morning.
The largest fire remains Donnie Creek in northeastern B.C., which is over 506,000 hectares.
