The smokey smell in Nelson is the result of wildfires south of the border, according to the Southeast Fire Centre.

"It is quite smokey in the area right now due to the jet stream being blown up from the States," information officer Karlie Shaugnessy says. "There are some very large wildfires at the moment."

Shaugnessy says a westerly flow the last week or so cleared out smoke lingering in our area, but a southerly flow has since returned.

No major fires are burning in the Nelson area right now.
