A man who tried to jump from the pier in Nelson into Kootenay Lake was stopped Friday by a police officer and citizens.

Police say around 11 a.m. they responded to a report at the public wharf about a man threatening to throw himself over.

They arrived to find two people speaking to and comforting the distraught man, however he suddenly made for the raining and attempted to jump.

“A Nelson police officer intervened and with the help of the citizens was able to pull the man back over the railing to safety,” Sgt. Steve Bank says.

The man was taken to hospital. The police officer also needed medical treatment, as he hurt his knee during the incident.
