Word on the opening of the Nelson Cinemax should finally come down in the next few days.

An announcement on the grand opening of the Nelson Cinemax is imminent, according to the proprietor.

“I will have something soon, and yes we will open the cinema,” Kirk Nielsen said in an email. “I have an issue with one of the partners that we’re working out right now.”

The theatre has been closed for renovations since Nielsen took over in September. Originally he hoped to have it ready by November, then by Christmas.

Work was hampered in part because installing the new stadium-style seats proved a bigger job than anticipated.

The Cinemax, formerly the Civic Theatre, is owned by the city and leased to Nielsen.

City manager Kevin Cormack couldn’t shed any light on when the movie house might finally reopen.

“We’re having those discussions about where exactly they are and how they can get back on track,” he said. “We don’t have anything firm at this stage.”

In addition to new seats, phase one of the upgrade includes a new lobby, washrooms, and sound system.
