A cougar (not the one pictured) was seen Tuesday evening in Nelson.

UPDATED: Cougar spotted in Fairview, Rosemont

Nelson police say a cougar was spotted Tuesday around 9 p.m. in Fairview and last night in Rosemont.

Nelson police say a cougar was spotted Tuesday around 9 p.m. in the 500 block of 7th St. in Fairview. The cougar was last seen heading towards Lakeside Park.

A cougar was also spotted shortly before 8 p.m. in Rosemont last night.

Sgt. Corey Hoy says if you spot a cougar that doesn’t run away, you should stay calm, stand your ground, and don’t back down. Back away slowly when safe to do so. Pick up children, but do not bend down, turn your back, or run.

Running triggers an innate predatory response in cougars which could lead to an attack, Hoy said.
