UPDATED: Salmo: Stephen White elected mayor

Village of Salmo: Stephen White will be the new mayor of Salmo.

Stephen White has been elected mayor of Salmo.

White received 245 votes to Henry Huser’s 196 and Dennis McLean’s 56. Incumbent Ann Henderson did not seek re-election. None of the incumbents were re-elected.

“I just tried to be open with people,” White said. “I tried to ensure people had a document that outlined specifics of what I thought needed to be done and I shared my work experience in similar roles.

“People really seemed to appreciate that I went door to door. It was important for me to actually visit people and listen to their concerns. People agreed that all the secrecy was hurting the community and they wanted it to end. They wanted the divisions in the community to end and they voted in record numbers for a mayor and council that they thought could best do that.”

In the race for council, Ken Anderson topped the polls with 304 votes followed by Cathy Paton with 299, Steven Dimock 232, and Dan Danforth 214.

Those not elected were incumbent Bob Vliet with 158, fellow incumbent and former mayor Merle Hanson 154, Diana Lockwood with 150, Jonathon Heatlie with 120, incumbent Janine Haughton with 90, Dan Isaacs with 69, Curtis Richens with 62 and Jim Mullaly with 10.

Salmo was the last municipality in BC to file its results online, which did not happen until after 10 a.m. today. Chief elections officer Kandy Schroder said the count lasted close to midnight.

(CORRECTION: An earlier version of this story misstated the vote totals for Jonathon Heatlie and omitted Janine Haughton.)
