The West Kootenay Traffic Services, Nelson City Fire Department and BC Ambulance responded to the scene of a collision on Highway 3A near the Taghum Bridge just before noon on Monday.
A 2003 GMC Safari Van, driven by an 87-year-old male who was travelling with his wife from Kaslo toward Castlegar, crossed the centre line struck a lamp standard then rolled, trapping its occupants. Both were safely removed from the vehicle and taken to Kootenay Lake Hospital with minor injuries.
At this point a possible mechanical failure of the vehicle is being investigated and a mechanical evaluation will be completed.
The RCMP would like to thank the travelers in the are for stopping and assisting in the dramatic crash. A special thanks to Nelson Hydro who happened to witness the wreck and ensured the electricity of the lamp standard was turned off.
