A steel collection box used by the Nelson Nordic Ski Club was cut off and stolen from the Busk/Euphrates parking lot on the weekend. The theft was discovered early Sunday morning.

“It’s very disappointing that people would do this to a non-profit club,” said Lisa Butterworth, the fee collector for the club.

“They probably got nothing,” she said, adding the box - or vault - is emptied one or two times a day.

She said the culprits cut through one-quarter-inch thick metal to remove the orange rectangular metal container. The box, used to collect the $14 daily ski fee on an honour system, has the words “Pay here” in yellow tape on the front.

The box, located next to the club’s small kiosk, was mounted on a shelter wall in the Busk/Euphrates parking lot, about 11 km south of Nelson, and about 1 km south of the club’s other ski area at Apex.

The Nelson Nordic Ski Club has about 850 members.

The Nelson RCMP have opened a file on the case.
