Winlaw mosquito control referendum fails

The initiative received 339 votes against, and 118 in favour

A referendum on a mosquito control bylaw for the Winlaw area has failed.

Unofficially, the initiative received 339 votes against and 118 in favour, with a 41 per cent voter turnout, according to the Regional District of Central Kootenay website after the polls closed today.

The mosquito control service would have taxed property owners within a portion of Electoral Area H (area north of Vallican to the south boundary of the Village of Slocan) a total of $74,400.00 per year. That would have amounted to $118.80 for a property valued at $300,000.
