An elderly woman was rescued this afternoon after her vehicle rear-ended a logging truck on the Kootenay Lake ferry.
Marine clerk Amy Nealy with ferry operator Western Pacific Marine says it happened around 12:15 p.m. as the MV Balfour was being loaded on the Kootenay Bay side.
“It’s unclear if she was suffering from a medical condition, but she lost control of her vehicle,” she says. “They had to break one of the back windows to get to her. She wasn’t able to operate the power windows.”
Nealy believes the woman was conscious, but wasn’t sure about her injuries.
The ferry sailed after a delay, and was met by an ambulance on the Balfour side. The woman was taken to hospital and her vehicle towed. The logging truck was able to drive away.
Nealy says the ferry has since been running behind by about half an hour, although they haven’t lost a sailing.
“The traffic hasn’t been that heavy today so there hasn’t been a large backlog either,” she says.
The Balfour is currently filling in for the much larger MV Opsrey 2000, which is out for scheduled maintenance.
