July 15, 1947 - December 26, 2024
In loving memory ~
Anthony John Hill, known as 'Tony' for much of his life, passed away on December 26, 2024 in Kelowna, British Columbia, where he was receiving treatment for cancer. He was 77.
Tony was born July 15, 1947, in Woking, Surrey, UK. He was raised in North London, in the aftermath of World War II. His mother played and taught piano, so he grew up with music all around him. As he got older, he shifted from his childhood lessons in classic piano to fall in love with the British music scene of the 1960s, taught himself acoustic guitar, travelled and eventually emigrated to Canada in his late 20s.
Trained as an engineering technician, he was a handyman by nature as well as profession - and renovated many homes throughout the community over the years. He started rehabilitating electronics as a child and kept the habit going his whole life. He was very politically active and a keen student of music, alternative medicine, philosophy, and science fiction. He practiced Aikido for many years, and earned his black belt in his 60's. Though he became a little less physically mobile later in life, he kept active listening to and making electronic music and, somehow, incredibly, performing impressive feats of home repair. He was a regular at music events throughout the region, rarely missing one.
Tony is survived by his four children: Andrew (Stephanie Grant) of Nelson; Steph (Paul McMonagle) of Sheffield UK; Gareth (Emily Vineberg) of Montreal; and Norah (Bruce Pashe) of Vancouver Island, as well as grand-children Theo and Freya; sister Lysbeth, her children and grandchildren; ex-wife Katie; and his many, many friends and acquaintances.
A Celebration of Life will be held at the Nelson Rod and Gun Club, February 21 from 11:30 am - 2 pm. Guests are invited to bring memories and some finger food to share, and a Zoom link will be created for those who cannot attend in person but would like to participate. Please let Andrew know if you would like the link. Anthony was a quirky, creative and kind man, and the family looks forward to remembering him with his friends.
