Birney Joseph Markevich

March 15, 1941 - September 14, 2017

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Birney Joseph Markevich on September 14, 2017. Birney was born on March 15, 1941 to Michael & Mary Markevich in Saskatoon, SK and grew up on the family farm in Dana, SK with his 2 brothers & 4 sisters.

Birney was a Canadian Armed Forces Lieutenant Corporal, stationed in Edmonton, AB when he met the love of his life, Wendy. After their marriage, they moved to Nelson, BC where Birney worked for Kootenay Forest Products and they raised their young family. He then became a Custodian for School District #8 until his retirement.

Birney was an avid gardener and if you know anyone with a "Green" thumb, Birney's was "Golden". He could grow anything, anywhere, in any condition and have it turn out twice the size of any other garden around him. Birney was always taking care of everyone around him and would always be ready to lend a hand to family & friends. Although, most of the time, he was kept busy by all of his grandchildren & great grandchildren. We miss you dad.

Birney is survived by his children; Rebecca Markevich, Dan (Lisa) Markevich, Robin (Shawn) Cartlidge, Melissa (Jeff) Harfman and Aimee (Chris) Mores; his grandchildren Ethan & Colton, Colby & Tyson, Christian & Jordan, Alyssa & Connor; his great grandchildren Benjamin & Lincoln; his siblings Joe (Hilary) Markevich, Molly Foster, Lily (Jerry) Ashe, Linda Ulsifer, Madeline Markevich & Martin (Pat) Markevich.

He was predeceased by his wife Wendy, his parents Michael & Mary Markevich, brother's-in-law; Frank Foster & Jim Ulsifer.

A special thank you to the doctors & nurses at Kelowna General Hospital for the great care they took of dad before his passing.

A private family interment was held at the Nelson Memorial Park Cemetery on Friday, October 13th.

In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in Birney's memory to the charity of your choice.
