Brian Gordon Holmes passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on January 18th, 2025, at the age of 89. Brian was born in Revelstoke, British Columbia on October 30th, 1935. His childhood in the Kootenays instilled a lifelong commitment to the area. He had an active intellect and was an engaged member of the Nelson Streetcar Society, the Land Rover Club, the Second Winds singing group, the Anglican Church of Nelson, and Learning in Retirement until late in life. He was also an early alpine enthusiast and charter member of REI, and enjoyed being a season's pass holder at the Whitewater ski area into his early 80's.
Brian attended the University of Washington as an undergraduate and graduate student, leaving with a PhC level of study in anthropology and archeology. He spent many years working with indigenous communities of coastal British Columbia, and participating in archeological digs in Eastern Washington, and in and around the Valley of the Kings, Egypt.
He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Suzanne Holmes, as well as his children, Catherine Holmes and Edward Holmes, and grandchildren Esme, Thomas, and Jozi. He was preceded in death by his brothers, John Holmes and Philip Holmes.
A memorial service will be held at St. Saviour's Anglican Procathedral of Nelson on Saturday, February 1st at 2PM. All friends and family are welcome. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to: KERPA (kerpa.org), and The Primate's World Relief and Development Fund (pwrdf.org). The Holmes' are especially appreciative of the Kaslo Victorian Auxiliary Hospital Long Term Care staff.
