Dave lost his battle with old age on April 17 at a ripe old 93 years.

Dave was born in Nakusp to Benjamin and Ethel Meakins. The family moved

to Nelson when Dave was 13 and he went to work for Burns Lumber at age 15. He eventually became one of the owners of the company and opened a branch office in Cranbrook in 1962.

He is survived by his wife of 69 years Lillian, sister Mary of Parksville, son Keith (Monique) of Kamloops, grandchildren Jane Williams (Tom) of Portland Oregon, Cara Tsoi of San Francisco, Jeff Meakins and Jon Meakins of Victoria and great grandson Zachary Williams. Dave was pre-deceased by daughter Gail Tsoi (Andy) and by his brothers George and Wally both of Vancouver.

During his years in Nelson, Dave was active with the 3rd Nelson Boy Scouts on the Group Committee and as camp quartermaster.

He always had a welcoming smile for friends and customers and loved fishing, gardening and huckleberry picking. He loved to share his garden produce with neighbours, especially in Cranbrook where 40 years of tender loving care made for the sweetest carrots. He remembered fondly the many winter evenings curling in both Nelson and Cranbrook.

No flowers. At Dave’s request, he will

be cremated with no formal ceremony.
