Dean Francis Attwood was born in Exeter, ON on May 25, 1927. His father was in the Air Force, and as a child Dean lived in many places from the East Coast to the West.

Dean trained as a Dental Technician in Montreal from 1947 - 1951 and was awarded a medal for the highest academic marks in gold work in Quebec.

Dean met his wife Grayce in Grade 6 in Longuiel, QC. They were married on June 30, 1951 and moved to Vancouver, BC where Dean worked as a Dental Technician at his own lab for the next 10 years. In 1961, Dean moved to Nelson with his wife and two daughters, Deanna and Cheryl, where he owned and operated the Attwood Dental Lab until his retirement in 1989.

Dean was always building and working with wood. He built his home at 17 Mile on Kootenay Lake, and many of the furnishings inside and out. He was also very generous in giving away much of the furniture he made.

Dean also enjoyed travel, fishing, and getting firewood.
