It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Debra Melody (Mel) Rhodes of Springhill Nova Scotia. Originally from Nelson B.C. Mel passed away peacefully on the morning of Sunday June 10th after a long battle with cancer at the age of 59.

Melody is predeceased by parents Connie (Hird) and Fred Rhodes. Melody is survived by sister Dee (Dan) Harlow, children Selena Rhodes Scofield and Landon (Dana) Marsden and grandchildren Zealah and Elijah.

Melody had a passion for music from a very early age, she taught herself guitar and had many students over the years. She loved playing the piano with her favorite piece being "Claire de Lune".

Melody was a avid writer, having published many articles, stories, poems and children's books. She was also a skilled editor and proofreader. Parrots held a special place in her heart; she loved rehabilitating birds in need. Even though she spent her later years out east, the natural beauty of the Kootenays were close to her heart.

Mel will always be remembered for her wacky sense of humour, delicious homemade bread and beautiful singing voice. She had a special ability to give you sound advice with a kind word. She will be missed but never forgotten.

A private ceremony will be held at a later date to bring her back home to her mountains.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to All Saints Hospital, Springhill Nova Scotia where she received exemplary care.

Special thanks to the Cumberland VON nurses for their care and concern throughout her illness.
