July 22, 1939 - August 3, 2021
It is with profound sadness we announce the passing of our dear loved one, Donald, who passed away peacefully on August 3, at his home in Nelson, surrounded by his loving family.
Don was born in Trail, B.C. on July 22, 1939. Upon graduating from J. Lloyd Crowe high school in Trail, he earned a full hockey scholarship to Michigan Technological University in Houghton, Michigan where he earned a BSc degree in metallurgical engineering and a BSc in engineering administration.
He achieved the Dean's List each year for outstanding academic and athletic achievements and was named in the US publication, "Who's Who In American Colleges And Universities".
During his junior year, he married his high school sweetheart, Lucille (Marchessault). August 20th, 2021 would have marked their 61st wedding anniversary.
Don was a production engineer for Alcan Aluminum in Kitimat; the superintendent of the iron and steel plant for Cominco in Kimberley, and the manager of personnel and industrial relations at the Skookumchuck pulp and paper mill in Canal Flats.
In 1978, Don graduated from UBC with his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree and joined the Comer Dental Clinic in Williams Lake, BC. He was later hired as the Director of Members Services for the BC College of Dental Surgeons, retiring in 2000 and receiving the Distinguished Service Award for his contributions to the dental profession in BC.
Following retirement, the family moved to Nelson, where he worked on restoring their heritage home and drove a city bus part time - a job he often said was his favorite. He was an avid fly fisher and an active member of the West Kootenay Fly Fishing Club.
For both Don and his wife, family was, and remains, the very heart and center of their lives. He is predeceased by parents, Mary (Mattiazzo) and Arnold Lauriente, sister Bernice Ruscko (Jewitt) and infant grandson, Christian Bowley.
He is survived by his spouse Lucille (Marchessault), sister Cynthia Lauriente, five children; Katherine Bonner (Lynn James); Patrick Lauriente (Tracy), Rebecca Lauriente, Victoria Lauriente-Hillebrand (Christopher), and Anna Lauriente; nine grandchildren; Erica Kobryn (Oktawian), Stephan Bottin, Teagan Lauriente, Tanna Lauriente, Madeline Lauriente-Bowley, Sophia Lauriente-DuToit, and triplets Lucas, Nico, and Arnold Lauriente; three great-grandsons Owen, Mason, and Liam Kobryn; his aunt Norma (Marchiori) Milne; brother and sister-in-law Irene (Marchessault) and Dario Nonis and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A man of many talents, Don was a skilled hockey player, scratch golfer, ski patroller, a great fly-tyer and fisherman, and a talented public speaker and story-teller with a great sense of humor.
But perhaps his greatest achievement was that he was a great guy who was loved and respected by many and for whom we give sincere thanks for having had him in our lives. You are so loved by your family and friends Don, and we are missing you terribly. You are forever in our hearts.

In memory of Don, donations may be made to the B.C. Cancer Control Agency.

A Fisherman's Prayer
God grant me that I may live to fish until my dying day,
and when it comes to my last cast, I then most humbly pray,
when in the Lord's safe landing net,
I'm peacefully asleep, that in his mercy I am judged
big enough to keep.
