In loving memory ~
Doreen Barnes passed away peacefully November 2, 2024 at the age of 86 in Kelowna, at Age Care Brandt's Creek Mews Care Home.
Doreen was born in 1938 In Lamont, Alberta to her mother Elizabeth Baldwin. They then moved to Frenchman's Butte, Saskatchewan where Elizabeth married Conrad Wert. Conrad adopted Doreen so she became Doreen Wert. Elizabeth and Conrad had 4 sons: Garrie, Paul, Bruce and Brian (twins).
Doreen grew up on a homestead, helping her mother around the house and milking the cows every day. She enjoyed playing with the many dogs and cats that came and went and especially loved her warmblood horses: Judy and Trixie. Often she would ride Judy to her school.
Doreen met her then to be husband, Peter, in 1962. They were married June, 1962, and had their first daughter, Barbara, the same year. Peter was an engineer with the Dept of Highways. The 3 of them moved to Prince George, then Victoria in 1966 where Brenda was born. In 1967 the 4 of them moved to Nelson, BC, to the north shore. In 1978 they built a house on an acreage in Taghum, 10 km west of Nelson, where they lived for many years.
Doreen loved to sit in her rocker and watch the rain come down. She dabbled in everything from karate to oil painting and needlepoint. She made the absolute best apple pies! She was a patient and very kind woman and mother.
She is survived by her daughter, Barbara Barnes of Kelowna, BC, and two brothers: Garrie Wert of Toronto, Ontario and Bruce Wert of Cherryville, BC. She is predeceased by her husband Peter Barnes, her daughter, Brenda Barnes, and her brothers Paul and Brian Wert.
Per Doreen's wishes, there will be no service. Doreen will be interred in the columbarium at the Anglican Church in Nelson, BC, along with her husband, Peter and her daughter, Brenda.
