Doris was born April 28th, 1921 in Russell, Manitoba. The fourth of five children, she grew up in Kenton, Manitoba where her parents ran a grocery store and boarding house during the 1930’s.

In her twenties, Doris began working for the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce, first in Kenton, then New Westminster, B.C., Kelowna B.C. (1949) and Nelson B.C.

In 1952 she married Art Smith and they started their family, Alison in 1955 and David in 1958.

Art was transferred to Nelson in 1964 as manager of W.H. Malkin Co. The family moved to four mile where Doris lived for the next forty six years.

Doris was an avid sportsperson, both as a participant and organizer. She curled most of her life winning numerous trophies as well as enjoying golf and tennis.

Doris had a strong curiosity towards life. She started and ran a daycare in the early 70’s while renovating an old farmhouse. She was voted top volunteer for the B.C. Winter Games held in Nelson in 1989. She ran the Smith House B&B during the 1990’s and made trips to Germany, Spain, Thailand, Portugal and other places.

A gardener to the end Doris passed away Wednesday, December 8th after a short illness.

Doris was predeceased by son Mark Charles (1953), husband Art (2008), brother Ted and sisters Edmee and Louise.

She is survived by brother Bob Termuende, daughter Alison ( Mark ), son David ( Janet ) and grandchildren Geoff, Hannah, Adraon and Trilby.

Cremation has taken place. A memorial will be held in the spring.

The family has appreciated the support and kindness of the Nelson community. We would like to give a special thanks to Dr. Walker, Dr. McKechnie, Cathy Large, Cora Fowler and Bev McMillan.
